How to Select an Anionic Flocculant for Tailings Thickening

The right flocculant for a thickener or tailings circuit cannot be selected by “high molecular weight” alone. Ore surface chemistry, process water, solids concentration, charge density and dosage must be evaluated together.

Why there is no single “best APAM”

Anionic polyacrylamides create larger flocs through polymer bridging. Mineralogy, surface charge, dissolved ions and solids concentration can make the same polymer behave very differently.

Molecular weight and charge density

Higher molecular weight can increase bridging potential, while charge density controls chain expansion and particle interaction. The optimum grade is the one that balances settling rate, overflow clarity and underflow density in the actual process water.

Dosage: why more is not always better

Too little polymer can give weak flocs; an appropriate range improves bridging; excessive dosage can reduce compaction or restabilize particles. Plant dosage should be established by controlled screening.

What data is needed?

Record ore/mineral type, PSD, feed solids, pH, process-water characteristics, current flocculant/dose and the target settling/clarity result. ALKAFLOC AB5023 should be verified with a representative process sample.
